Logichaos is a blog site created by Neil Moore with the help of John Wolgamot. Here you will find guides for Windows and Windows based programs. Logichaos started out as a hobby many years ago and over time it has become my personal website where I submit and edit guides and video tutorials. I maintain a list of free programs for Windows called The Ultimate List of Free Programs for Windows.

This guide will show you how to configure Unzbin, the free Usenet Downloader which is very similar to uTorrent in terms of interface and ease-of-use. It is tiny, robust, and supports features such as multiple connections, SSL encryption, automatic repair and extraction.  It's easy to install and configure.  Simply follow these steps.

1. Frequently Asked Questions

Is downloading files from Usenet free?
Depends.  Unzbin is a free downloader, but for most people, access to Usenet must be paid for in the form of a monthly subscription. Most usenet providers are reasonable, offering unlimited monthly downloads, SSL encryption, 600+ day retention, and multiple connections for around $15 per month.  I highly recommend against paying more than $20 a month.  Sometimes there are deals for as low as $10 a month, but those are rare and you have to be lucky to catch them.
Is Usenet secure or safer than BitTorrent or Limewire?
Yes.  Unlike peer 2 peer downloading programs, Usenet cuts out the middle man.  It's a direct connection between you and the Usenet Provider of your choice.  If you connect securely via SSL encryption, this prevents even your ISP from eavesdropping.  Usenet is literally bulletproof.
What are some good Usenet Providers?

There are at least 3 big dawg Usenet Providers out there.   According to newsgroupservers.net, they are Giganews, Highwinds, and Astraweb.

Personally, I recommend Highwinds due to their affordable price and acceptable service.  Highwinds plans can be found at Newshosting.com, Usenetserver.com, and Easynews.com.

Giganews offers a reasonable $12 unlimited with SSL encryption plan through Usenet.net.

Astraweb offers an $11 unlimited monthly plan at Astraweb.com.

The rest are either resellers or offer a poor and unaffordable service.  It's best to stick with one of the big three.

Is there a free trial?
Yes.  Most usenet providers offer a free trial of some sort.  Free trials usually exist as a 14 day trial with a certain number of gigabytes you're allowed to download.  A credit card, debit card, or paypal account is required, but will not be charged until after the 14 day free trial has expired. If you choose to cancel, you can do so any time before the trial ends and you will not be charged. This is a pretty reasonable deal considering you have access to an all you can eat buffet to download whatever you want at your maximum download rate.

2. Required Files

  1. Unzbin | Download Unzbin Installer
  2. A Usenet Provider (For help choosing a Usenet Provider, see What are some good Usenet Providers?)

3. Installation

  1. Install Unzbin with default settings.
  2. Run Unzbin.

4. Configuring Unzbin

  1. Go up to the Options menu and click Settings.

  2. From the Servers tab, click Add.

  3. Type the information provided by your Usenet Provider.  This information can be accessed by logging into your Usenet Provider's website, or from an e-mail you received from your Usenet Provider.

  4. Be sure to type the number of connections allowed by your Usenet Provider and check Use SSL.  When you're finished, click Add.

Note: Checking Use SSL will change the port from 119 to 563. 563 is the common port used for encrypted usenet downloading. Depending on your Usenet Provider, you may be required to use a different port for SSL, such as 8080.
  5. Switch to the Directories tab.  From here you can change folders for things such as Cache, Save Location, NZB Import Folder, and Extraction Folder.  I recommend creating folders for each of these on a harddrive with plenty of free space.

  6. Switch to the Misc tab.  Check Connect on launch.  You should also set your Bandwidth Limit to something reasonble.  Approximately 90% of your maximum download rate will allow you to browse the net and do other things, depending.  The Bandwidth Limit is measured in Kilobytes per second. When you are finished, you may close the settings window.

5. Searching for and Downloading files.

By default, Unzbin is configured to use the very good Usenet search website Binsearch.info.  You can either visit that website, or you can search for a file directly from the Unzbin search bar.

  1. Type something you would like to search for into the Unzbin Search Bar and press Enter.

  2. This will open your default web browser.  From there, scroll down until you find something that matches what you would like to download.  Click the Check box and click the Create NZB button.

  3. If you're using Firefox, your download window will appear like this.  Simply choose Open with Unzbin as the default action.  I recommend checking Do this automatically for files like this from now on.  Click OK.

The file should open in Unzbin and begin downloading automatically.  When the file has finished downloading, check your Unzbin Extraction folder.

6. Conclusion

Unzbin is a very elegant and easy to use program and it inspired me to write this guide.  If you found this guide useful or if you have any questions or suggestions, please do not hesitate to leave a comment below.  Please give this guide to your friends, they will appreciate Usenet over Bittorrent, or whatever crappy P2P program they have been stuck using.  :-)

Quoting manakel:
Stupid question but how do I know my usenet hostname? If I'm with hitnews for example, what is it hitnews.com? I'm so bad with these things... otherwise everything is fine i can load a file on unzbin but it doesn't download AT ALL!! really frustrating by the way..

Thanks for your help

Sorry it took me so long to respond. It appears as though your hostname is "news.hitnews.eu" according to the Hitnews help support page.

The hostname and other info is usually sent to you in an e-mail, so start there.

Hope that helps.
